Copy Chief is a forum about communication. As writers and persuaders and independent thinkers, we celebrate the power of words and their ability to cause strong reactions.

That means you may read and hear some language that would not be deemed “appropriate” in other places. Especially places some would consider “normal” business settings.

It’s fascinating… there are 7,000 languages in the world. The study of grammar dates back to 1900 BC. Yet, foul language and people’s reaction to a select few words remains a hotly debated topic here in North America. It seems we’re still just getting the hang of this speech thing.

So, let’s have just one rule: Keep your language in context.

I spent a decade on the road performing stand up comedy and I’ve now spent a decade surrounded by copywriters. The two groups share a lot of uncanny similarities… chief among them is a gold metal prowess for offensive language. I hardly notice it anymore, except if there’s kids at the next table in a restaurant or I notice someone looking particularly aggravated by it. (I’ve been compelled to buy more than one dinner with a secret note of apology.)

Look, if you’re salty, be yourself, but, you know, the considerate version. When you arrive at that grammatical crossroads between vulgar and considerate — go with considerate.

And if you’re easily offended, try not to be. It’s often a waste of energy that only empowers the offender.
